There’s a reason they're called the “dog days of summer.” Summer can mean time off work, time with family and more time outside with your dog. I know - all of us at the Canine Country Club of Arkansas are excited too!

Here in Roland and the Central Arkansas area, summers can get extremely hot and hot weather can exhaust your furry friend. Take some simple steps to keep your dog cool this summer as the temperatures rise.

Never leave your dog in the car

This should be a no-brainer, but we’ll say it anyway. Don't leave your dog in the car. Ever. Yes, even if you'll just be inside for a few minutes. Temperatures inside a car, even if it’s not terribly hot outside, can quickly become dangerous for your dog.

Keep your house cool

If you leave your dog at home alone, leave the air conditioner on and close the drapes to keep the temperature low for him or her.

Take them on walks during cool times of the day

Take your pup on a walk in the morning or once the sun goes down, instead of during the hottest part of the day. If you do need to go on a walk and the pavement is hot, consider protecting their paws with booties. Hot pavement can burn your dog’s paws and no one wants that!

Make a cool snack

We like iced tea and popsicles when it’s hot outside, so wouldn’t our dogs like a cold treat too? Freeze and fill a chew toy to give your dog a cooled-down snack to enjoy! Here’s one recipe that also sounds like a winner for your pup.

Water and shade: the ultimate duo

Try to keep your dogs inside when it’s extremely hot outside. If you do put them outside for a while, make sure they have plenty of shade and water. Maybe consider putting a kiddie pool in your backyard for them to play in and have (cool) fun.

From cool snacks to keeping their paws protected from hot pavement, there are simple, easy steps you can take to make sure your dog stays cool and happy this summer. When you go on vacation this summer, be sure to contact us here at the Canine Country Club of Arkansas. Your dog should have fun with us while you’re away, right? They can come for daycare, boarding, training, grooming and more. Request a reservation with us so your dog will love summer just as much as you do!
